My name is Kristi Smyers and I have worn many hats in
education: parent, volunteer, substitute, computer lab instructor, technology
coordinator, first grade teacher, and second grade teacher. Education has been
the most rewarding career I have ever had. I love bring my creativity and
energy into everything I do.
I grew up in a military
family moving frequently, living on both east and west coasts. I had the unique
opportunity to travel to many interesting places in the world. I received my bachelor’s degree at Midwestern State University. I worked for a short period
in the business world but always longed to work with children. When my young
family moved to the town of Decatur in 2000, I had the opportunity to follow my
dreams and work at an elementary school.
My first teaching role was to teach technology
to kindergarten through 4th grade in a rotational setting as an aide
at Carson Elementary. I taught technology understanding and skills to the
students; created projects and programs in and around the campus to encourage
use of technology. Aiding the teachers with technology needs and administrating
to online reading programs was another facet to my job.
After receiving an
Alternative Certification (ECAP), I was hired as a teacher at Carson
Elementary! I taught first grade for 7 years and second grade for 2
years. I absolutely loved it! Teaching students to love
and value reading and writing, along with becoming life-long, self-directed
learners in all areas is my passion. Helping others through the learning process
and seeing the fun that can blossom from knowledge is amazing!
My once
young family has grown, graduated, and moved on, leaving my husband and me in a
big, quiet house. So we are currently downsizing and relocating to the Denton area,
where I hope to continue my teaching career.
